You may think that deep cleaning is something you should do after a long time without visiting the dentist, or after consuming very sticky or dirty food. Actually, a deep cleaning is a specific procedure performed by the dental hygienist to treat periodontal diseases or periodontitis. It is usually carried out when the patient has not been to the dentist regularly (every six months) for dental cleaning.
The importance of deep dental cleaning
When you visit the dentist, the dentist will use an instrument called a periodontal probe to measure the area around the teeth and see if you have periodontal pockets (the area between the tooth and the gum where bacteria form). The depth of the gingival tissue between the teeth and the gums is called periodontal pockets when it is four millimeters or more. It is recommended that all adults undergo periodontal evaluation per year to determine if additional treatment is required. Measuring the depth of periodontal pockets is only part of a complete dental evaluation.
Ideally, normal healthy periodontal pockets are no more than 3 millimeters deep.If the periodontal pockets measure more than 5 millimeters, the dentist will most likely direct you to visit the dental hygienist for dental scaling and root planing.
Deep dental cleaning process
In the world of dentistry, deep cleaning is also called dental scraping and root planing. Dental scraping is the removal of plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and the area of periodontal pockets between the teeth and gums. Your dentist can perform these procedures with electric ultrasonic instruments or manual dental curettage tools.
Root planing is the other part of deep dental cleaning. The dental hygienist will use a dental scraping instrument to remove plaque and tartar from the root surface of the teeth. To get a dental scaling and root planing, you will have to visit the dentist at least twice a year. A follow-up visit may be necessary to confirm that the gums and teeth are healthy and that there is no depth in the periodontal pockets.
Post-appointment care for dental scraping and root planing
Ideally, after the appointment for deep dental cleaning, bacteria are removed from the periodontal pockets of the teeth and that in the next few weeks the gums are healthy, if the patient performs oral hygiene every day. The dental professional will recommend using Colgate Total, the best toothpaste. If additional mouthwash is required, your dentist may prescribe an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce the buildup of oral bacteria.
If deep dental scraping and visits to the dentist for a period of 3 months are not enough to reverse periodontal disease, you will need to consult a periodontist to consider periodontal treatment to follow.
