There are a multitude of popular myths about oral health that can affect us if we pay attention to them:
1- Only sugar causes cavities:Eating too much sugar increases the risk of getting cavities. As sugary food decomposes, it feeds the bacteria that creates plaque in the mouth and worsens the acids that can wear away the tooth surface. But even if your diet doesn’t contain a lot of sugar, it still exist a risk of getting cavities if you don’t have a proper daily oral hygiene (brushing and flossing properly)
2- Diet soda is better for oral health: Sugar is not the only component in sodas that damages teeth, acidity also contributes. Eventually, diet fizzy drinks may cause the same enamel erosion which may lead to greater sensibility and cavities. For a healthy alternative to soda, nothing is better than water.
3- White teeth are healthy teeth: Having white teeth is not always a foolproof sign of good oral health. The natural color of teeth slightly varies, especially as we grow older. The fact that teeth are white doesn’t mean that you can avoid visiting the dentist. A spotless smile may also contain infections or diseases.
4- Brackets are only for kids: Although it is very common for kids and teens to use brackets, there are more and more adults that bring themselves to straighten their teeth using orthodontia. Nowadays metal braces have been left behind since the advances in invisible orthodontia with transparents splints provide a more discreet option for adults.
5- There’s no need to brush milk teeth: False. Creating good brushing habits from an early age establishes behaviour patterns for life which leads to a life-long healthy smile and a good oral health.
