Children’s mouths have certain peculiarities with respect to adult’s oral cavities — and even to teenagers —.
Their oral cavities can have different characteristics during the first years of their lives and they might experience different disorders and pathologies associated with infancy. This fact allows for a probability of certain disorders and pathologies that, though not serious, are likely to alter our children’s routine.
For example, it’s quite frequent that children suffer accidents while playing or doing sports. And, as a result, they may hit their teeth leading to a lesion or a fracture. As a consequence, it’s likely that the dentist has to resort to perform a tooth composite restoration.
Apart from that, infancy is one of the times that tooth decay is more common as children's taste for sweets it’s universally known.
In case that tooth decay makes an appearance in a child’s mouth, the solution would consist of a dental filling, similar to that used on adults.
Recommendations
The first visit to a pediatric dentist should not be later than one year of age or within six months after the first tooth erupts in the mouth.
Brush your child’s teeth after every meal, especially before going to bed. Use a soft washcloth, a gauze or a soft-bristle toothbrush with very little toothpaste. Take your child to a pediatric dentist twice a year to make sure that his oral health is optimum.
These and other recommendations will be further discussed in the upcoming blog posts. What are your doubts?
