When we need a dental procedure we always ask ourselves about the pain that it can cause us, but how many times do we ask ourselves about the care we should have after them?
After a surgery or dental extraction there are many actions to consider to avoid complications and make our recovery easier. Once we are at home and without the supervision of our dentist, we can personally take charge of our speedy recovery.
What is a tooth extraction?
It is a surgical procedure where the tooth is removed from its cavity, it is necessary when there are extensive cavities, impossible to treat, broken teeth, there is not enough space for all the teeth for a correct alienation such as orthodontics, or when an infection occurs severe.
Although this procedure can be carried out on any of the teeth, the most common is that of the wisdom teeth.
Wisdom tooth extraction.
The molars have an eruption in the back of the mouth, they are the last pieces to emerge since they erupt between the ages of 17 and 24, and although some people may not have them, some develop 4, 2 upper and 2 lower. This surgery occurs when they grow without proper space in the bone of either the maxilla or the jaw, causing dental impaction, which triggers swelling, pain or infection; for this reason they are known as wisdom teeth.
What is the care after a tooth or tooth extraction?
The procedure is carried out in a clinic by specialists under local anesthesia and its recovery, although it is not usually long, requires special care to avoid and prevent any risk of infection.
Here are some of the points to watch out for, as well as the attention you should pay to them:
Bleeding
Your dentist will place a small sterile gauze in your mouth to create pressure on the suture and stop the bleeding as it reaches the clotting point. This process will last at least 30 minutes, after that you can remove the gauze.
Inflammation.
It is normal that after the surgical intervention your face could become inflamed for some time, place small cold compresses in the place where it was performed. Wrap some ice in a towel and place it on the inflamed part, this will reduce the swelling. Do this for 15 minutes at least 3 times a day.
Repose.
You must stay at rest for at least two days, avoiding physical activities and sudden movements. You need to stay relaxed; this in order to achieve a successful recovery and prevent the suture from having complications.
Hygiene.
Hygiene is necessary in the surgery area, it will have to be done with a brush and done carefully. Remember that you must keep the area clean in order to avoid infections.
Antibiotic / Analgesic.
Only under the prescription of your dentist, you can take pain relievers to help relieve pain and discomfort after surgery.
Diet.
Try to follow a soft diet, it is extremely important not to ingest any hot food or drink within 24 hours after the intervention. After a few days you can carefully consume more solid food.
