Gingivitis or inflammation of the gums is the initial phase of periodontal disease and the easiest to treat.
What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis or inflammation of the gums is the initial phase of periodontal disease and the easiest to treat. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque, the thin, sticky, colorless layer of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth and gums.
If plaque is not removed through daily brushing and flossing, toxins (poisonous substances) are produced that can irritate the gum tissue, leading to gingivitis. Damage can be reversed at this early stage of periodontal disease, as the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place are not yet affected. However, if this problem is not treated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis and cause permanent damage to the teeth and jaw.
How do I know if I have gingivitis?
Typical signs and symptoms of gingivitis include, but are not limited to: redness, inflammation, and tenderness in the gums, which may bleed during brushing. Another sign of this condition is recession or separation of the gums, which causes the teeth to appear elongated. Periodontal disease can cause periodontal pockets to form between the teeth and gums, where plaque and food debris accumulate. Some people may experience bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth frequently, even if the disease is not in an advanced stage.
How I can prevent gingivitis?
Having good oral hygiene habits is essential. Professional dental cleanings are also very important because once plaque has hardened and accumulated, or has turned into tartar, only the dentist or dental hygienist can remove it.
You can slow down the progression of gingivitis if you follow the following guidelines:
º Brush your teeth properly and floss to remove plaque and food debris, and control tartar buildup.
º Eat well to ensure proper nutrition and strengthen your jaws and teeth.
º Avoid cigarettes and other forms of tobacco.
º Schedule dental check-ups frequently.
