Many people wonder how important flossing teeth is
According to indications from recent reports, it is much more important than brushing your teeth; let's see why. It is true that there are those who affirm that the food never stays between the teeth with the excuse of not using the dental floss, since the plaque appears in our mouths and the dental floss can clean it.
The dental floss reaches the holes that a normal brush does not reach and removes the remains of food and plaque between the teeth and under the gum, preventing gum disease. Plaque is a substance made up of bacteria that could grow between the teeth and, consequently, irritate the gums and cause bleeding in the mouth.
Good news: gum disease is preventable
If we pay attention to our dental hygiene every day (brushing our teeth and flossing) and we do one or two oral cleanings at the dentist a year, it could be enough to prevent gum diseases and even to improve the state of these because, in certain cases, our own teeth can be maintained for a longer time.
Recommendations on how to floss properly
Dental floss is a fine, smooth nylon or plastic floss that removes food and plaque that remains or is created between the teeth. Some people prefer floss or dental tape, which is wider than the floss and easier to use. Although flossing is recommended, it is true that misuse could damage the gums. Therefore, you should follow your dentist's recommendation on how to use it. These tips can also help you:
1-Cut a 45cm thread and wrap it around the middle finger of each hand.
2-Hold the thread with your thumb and forefinger of each hand so that you can insert the thread into the gap between the teeth. Carefully guide the dental floss between the teeth using a smooth saw movement. Do not pull the floss sharply towards the gums, since you can make them bleed.
3-When you get to the gum line, make a C-curve and slide it through the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel resistance.
4-Hold the floss against the tooth. Carefully scrape off that side of the tooth and pull the floss away from the gum. Perform the same action on the other part of the tooth.
5-Repeat the same technique in the next hole and so on until you complete all the mouth pieces.
6-Do not forget the molars, the teeth that are at the bottom of the mouth.
