Proper care of children's teeth and gums includes brushing and rinsing daily. It also includes getting routine dental exams and getting the necessary treatments like fluoride, extractions, fillings or braces (dental correctors) and other orthodontia.
Your child must have healthy teeth and gums for good general health. Injured, diseased or poorly developed teeth can cause:
º Bad nutrition
º Painful and dangerous infections
º Problems with language development
º Problems with facial and jaw development
º Low self-esteem
º Irregular bite
CARING FOR A BABY'S TEETH
Although newborns and babies do not have teeth, care of the mouth and gums is important. Follow these recommendations:
º Use a damp cloth to clean baby's gums after each feeding.
º DO NOT take your child to bed with a bottle of milk, juice, or sugar water. Use only water for bottles at bedtime.
º Start using a soft toothbrush instead of the cloth to clean your child's teeth as soon as the first tooth appears (usually between 5 and 8 months of age).
º Check with your child's healthcare provider if you need to take oral fluoride.
THE FIRST VISIT TO THE DENTIST
º Your child's first visit to the dentist should be between the time the first tooth appears and the time all of his or her primary teeth are visible (before age 2 1/2).
º Many dentists recommend a 'test' visit. This can help your child get used to the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations in the office before the actual exam.
º Children who tend to have clean gums and brush their teeth every day will be more comfortable on visits to the dentist.
CARING FOR YOUR CHILD'S TEETH
º Brush your child's teeth and gums at least twice a day, especially before going to bed.
º Allow him to brush himself so that he gets into the habit, but you should do the actual brushing.
º Take it to the dentist every 6 months. Tell the dentist if your child sucks his thumb or breathes through his mouth.
º Teach him the safe way to play and what to do if a tooth breaks or falls out. If you act quickly, you can often save the tooth.
º When your child grows teeth, you should start flossing each night before going to bed.
º Your child may need orthodontic treatment to prevent long-term problems.
