Dentists recommend undergoing a dental cleaning performed by a professional once or twice a year.
It is one of the simplest interventions of all those performed in dentistry and its objective is to eliminate the bacterial plaque and tartar accumulated in the teeth, the gingival line and the interdental spaces. It is simple, but it requires meticulously to carry out the pre-established protocol for this purpose.
The first step is to analyze both teeth and gums, rule out that there is some kind of periodontal disease, or that some tooth may have some mobility and locate the location of bacterial plaque and tartar. The latter is done by using a solution that stains the bacterial plaque and using a magnifying glass and a scraper.
The bacterial plaque and tartar are subsequently removed using a tool called a curette. Special attention is given to tartar that may have accumulated below the gum line. Some bleeding from the gum may be caused in this maneuver. The interdental spaces are then cleaned using dental floss or interproximal brushes.
The next step is to use pressurized water in which a special bicarbonate has been diluted to remove stains that have formed, for example, by ingestion of foods containing pigments, such as coffee or wine.
Once what is strictly the teeth and gum cleaning maneuver is completed, the teeth are polished, which is done using a fluoridated and whitening paste that extends over the teeth with the double objectives of the surface of the teeth remain completely smooth and give a whiter shade to the teeth.
The cleaning ends with the application of an anti-inflammatory gel that will help reduce the discomfort that the dental cleaning procedure may have caused and, at the same time, prevent gum inflammation.
Of course, before leaving the dentist's office, the professional will inform you of how to properly perform your daily dental hygiene to avoid the accumulation of bacterial plaque and the formation of tartar.
