Attending it from childhood will prevent major evils in adulthood.
Poor oral health is related to heart disease due to the spread, through the bloodstream, of bacteria and other germs of the mouth, said Federico Angeles, of the Postgraduate Degree in Dentistry.
Not paying attention to gum abnormalities, burning mouth syndrome or musculoskeletal disorders, is associated with the risk of developing heart conditions; Unfortunately, "Mexican culture does not have dental health as a priority," he said.
The university recognized that there are no figures on dental problems associated with major illnesses, but it is estimated that during 40 years of professional career a dentist can run into a dozen cases.
Therefore, oral health care is key throughout life; However, going to the dentist is not a common practice in Mexico, insisted the head of the Oral Physiology Laboratory.
“Although we think that a toothache does not cause death, it should be taken into account; it is essential to be aware of certain symptoms such as pain in the jaw, joint, and difficulties with the lower teeth. ”
In these cases, the dental pain is throbbing and the facial oppressive and burning, and can be on both sides. "The specialist has to be aware of these symptoms and be aware of what is happening and the possible consequences," he added.
According to a study conducted by Marcelo Kreiner, a dentist at the University of the Republic, in Uruguay, there is a greater likelihood that, as a symptom of a heart problem, a person has pain in the jaw, joints or gums, mainly women, Federico Ángeles said.
Caries and microorganisms
The mouth receives constant attacks of microorganisms, and hygiene habits and decay can cause, in the long run, more severe problems.
Alkaline compounds in food tend to weaken tooth enamel, allowing the generation of tooth decay. According to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, of the Ministry of Health, in Mexico more than 95 percent of the population over 40 suffer from loss of teeth or tooth decay.
When they are not treated, they can generate infections that reach the gum and generate abscesses. In addition, “with tooth decay there is loss of enamel, the pulp of the tooth is affected and subsequently the gum; bacteria are filtered that cause the bone to be lost, ”he added.
If this problem, known as periodontal disease, is not treated in time, the tooth is lost, and if the infection is not treated properly, it reaches the bloodstream and affects organs such as the heart.
Prevention, the key
To avoid these situations, prevention is key, reiterated Federico Ángeles. Attending from childhood will help that in adulthood there are no difficulties; To do this, it is necessary to generate a culture of grooming and set aside the fear of the dentist.
