Dental implants are artificial roots that dentists place in the mouth to replace missing teeth. It’s important to remember that once dental implants are placed they need to be checked up annually, as well as having regular specific cleaning sessions to keep them for a long time without any signs of pathologies.
Implant maintenance and proper state will depend on bone and gum health surrounding it.
Prolonged inflammation of the gum surrounding the implants can lead to a peri-implantitis, a disease commonly associated with dental implants which can result in bone loss. The most advanced cases of peri-implantitis can even provoke the loss of the dental implant.
BE AWARE OF THESE SIGNS:
Occasional bleeding of the gums or bleeding during dental brushing, pus or pain when brushing the gum surrounding the implant, receding gum or the presence of a phlegmon are signs that you need to come and visit us.
How to take care of dental implants after their placement?
After dental implants placement, we offer you a series of aftercare tips you should follow aiming at minimizing the possible complications that may arise.
-Proper oral hygiene: The first few days after the procedure it will help to reduce the appearance of possible infections in the surgical site. The use of mouthwashes and antiseptic creams are usually recommended after dental implant surgery.
-Follow the instructions prescribed by your implantologist as regards medication to be taken after the surgical intervention.
-Do not use mouthwash during the first 24 hours in order not to destroy the clot that forms in the surgical site. Bleeding in the wound can last 48 hours.
-It’s important to avoid smoking, at least the first three days after surgery, since the effect of tobacco can delay wound healing and cause complications.
-Soft and cold diet during the first 48 and 72 hours after implant placement. It’s essential not to chew so much in the surgical area.
-Applying a cold compress to the face near the implant site will help minimize swelling and pain.
-A proper oral hygiene will help to lengthen the life of our implants. Using a toothbrush, dental flossing and interdental toothbrushes is highly recommended. In many cases it’s necessary to use oral irrigators.
Finally, it needs to be reminded that it’s essential to schedule regular visits to the dentist so that he can check if oral hygiene measures are being taken properly, to control the state of the bone that surrounds the implant, as well as to examine or change some components such as screws or prosthesis attachments.
